about

On 1st February 1914, the ‘Hera’, a German barque,
was wrecked on Gull Rock, just off Nare Head in the parish of
Veryan, Cornwall. Only five of the crew of twenty-four survived.
Sixteen bodies were eventually recovered, fifteen of which are buried in Veryan churchyard. Their grave, nearly a hundred feet in length,
is the longest in the country.

This release is a setting by Stuart Estell, to traditional tunes, of Lucy Newlyn's three-part ballad that relates the events of that fateful night, recorded in the chapel of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, in October 2014.

Download includes digital booklet containing the full text plus notes on the text by Lucy Newlyn and notes on the performance by Stuart Estell.

Please note this is not a full-CD length recording. Running times are listed alongside the tracks above.

about

Stuart Estell Birmingham, UK

Stuart Estell, also performing as Lachenalia, Cyff Gwawd and Noise Against Mothers.

I use my own name for Folk music and classical music - unprocessed acoustic music, if you like.

Lachenalia is droney stuff. Cyff Gwawd uses broken tape machines. Noise Against Mothers is just a horrible racket.
