Dives and Lazarus

As it fell out upon a day
Rich Diverus gave a feast
And he invited all his friends
And gentry of the best
And Lazarus laid him down and down
Down at Diverus' door
"Some meat and drink brother Diverus
Bestow upon the poor"
"Thou art none of my brother Lazarus
Begging at my door
No meat or drink shall I give to thee
Nor bestow upon the poor"
So Lazarus laid him down and down
Down by Diverus' wall
"Some meat and drink brother Diverus
Or from hunger starve I shall"
"Thou art none of my brother Lazarus
Begging by my wall
No meat or drink shall I give to thee
And from hunger starve you shall"
So Lazarus laid him down and down
Down at Diverus' gate
"Some meat and drink brother Diverus
For Jesus Christ his sake"
Then Diverus sent out his savage men
To whip poor Lazarus away
But they had no power to strike one stroke
And they flung their whips away
Then Diverus sent out his savage dogs
To bite him as he lay
But they had no power to bite at all
And they licked his sores away
--
And as it fell out upon a day
Poor Lazarus sickened and died
There came an Angel out of heaven
His soul therein to guide
"Rise up, rise up brother Lazarus
And come along with me
There's a place for you reserved in heaven
In angels' company"
--
And as it fell out upon a day
Rich Diverus sickened and died
There came two serpents out of Hell
His soul therein to guide
"Rise up, rise up brother Diverus
And come with us to see
A dismal place prepared in Hell
From whence you never shall flee"
And Diverus looked up with streaming eyes
To see poor Lazarus blessed
"Give me one drop of water brother Lazarus
To quench my flaming thirst.
"And had I as many hours to abide
As there are leaves of grass
Oh, then there would be an end, but now
Hell's pains will never be past.
"And were but alive again
Even for half an hour
Then I would make my peace with you
And the devil would have no power."
